The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Here we Go! As for the questions. I keep time in both 24 hour and 12 hour. Me dan lo mismo (they give me the same, or it doesn´t really matter). IT wasn´t an overly hard change. I did recieve the package [from the teenage boys in the ward (congregation)]. Many thanks to them and I will be trying to write soon. If there is a time change [going off daylight savings time], I am not aware of it; however if there is I am sure I will hear soon enough. Elder Anderson is from Spanish Fork, Utah. La fabrica!

Alright, I am going to try and keep this as short and not frustrated as possible, maybe frustration is a bad word. It gives me pain is more to the point. We have seen so much problems with people this week. Just the complete lack of respect for the familia as a social unit is ridiculous. I don´t see how people can be so completely irresponsible.  First example was the most shocking. We have this investigator who was just doing fantastic. She wanted to get baptized so bad that we were teaching for like an hour and a half every single day. She was excited for it, all of the commandments didn´t even phase her. She received her answer spiritually and was just dying to get baptized. Anyway, all was well until Saturday night when we passed. A little bit of background. She had always talked about her hija who is separated from her spouse. And she always said how bad that was for her grandson. That he had some social issues because of it and therefore needed therapy. So the family seemed to be super important to her. Then on Saturday we felt inspired to ask for how many years she had been married and she said: “Oh well for like 30 years but I am seperated too. I just live with my partner.” COMO!!!! ¿Como es que puede decir todo eso sobre su nieto y vivir en la misma manera? It was painful. How can you live like that with personal experience telling you that it is bad for families.  Anyway, now we have to work with that. Not that I am angry, just me da pena.

The other situation we saw this week was one of Abuse. Just ugly. This lady is a member, as are all of her children, which are young, but her husband is not. She really really just works hard for them. We have always sensed there that was something under the surface; and the other day when we went to share a quick uplifting message, she just burst out crying and counted us about her husband and the abuse that is there. With her 4 kids just watching her and not knowing what to say. Us stuck there, without any personal experience and very little ability to do anything. It was painful to see, it was painful to understand the deep effects of a home that isn’t based on gospel principles.

Here it is to remember it.

THE FAMILY A PROCLAMATION TO THE WORLD The First Presidency and Council of the TwelveApostles of the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter-Day Saints WE, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

WE DECLARE the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.

HUSBAND AND WIFE have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord.” Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

THE FAMILY is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

WE WARN that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

WE CALL UPON responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

–I don´t have any other real words to share on the subject. It was a rough week in that sense. However there were a lot of points of light. Seeing families that were strong and healthy, a sharp and harsh contrast between them and the other families. If there is anything important in this world it is the family. When we are young we learn from our families. They show us how to overcome frustration, impatience, anger, injustice, how to overcome challenges, how to be happy, how to behave ourselves around other people. The parents, pilares, they stand there and show the children how to compromise how to overcome differences. The reason the family is the base, is because if a Man and a Woman cannot keep the peace between them and in their household, how on earth can the children learn to keep peace in their relationships and in the world in general?

That is my rant for the week. That is what really got me. That is what I saw and thought about. What kind of family I want to have and how thankful I am for my family. That for all of its little problems, that we are whole and that we work, based on gospel principles to overcome our difficulties.

The baptism of the couple who were married.

On a much different note. I went to a chilean wedding this weekend and right now absolutely mojado (soaked) from playing soccer. Those were very much fun parts of the week. There is a whole lot more that happened in this week but I can relate it all after the mission. I want you all to remember the importance of the family though. I don´t care if you pick up anything else, just the family! I love you, thank you for being the best family ever.

de verdad,

Elder Tonkinson

For the translation I got “les ama y una mas” which means “loves and more”.

Actually, Mark said it means ““I love you all and there’s nothing else to say” as in that is the greatest thing I can say.
